If I’m Not Your Lover is one of my favorite songs of all time and I’d like to take a few minutes and explain why. Before I start, I’ll address the giant elephant in the room. Yes, he sported that unibrow on purpose. I know! Its so crazy!
You see, this song is about Al B Sure’s struggles to get close to the woman of his dreams BUT, he’s having trouble because she only calls him late at night for one thing. We can all assume it is sex that she wants and after she gets it, she tells him to leave.
This upsets Al B Sure and confuses him a bit. He tries not to come off as “clingy” but explains that, if he is in fact, coming on too strong, its only because he wants to be the guy who loves her most.
Then he reiterates his question, if he’s not her lover, just who is he? 12 times over until the conclusion of the song.
Its a good question and I think we’ve all asked it at one point or another in our life. The lyrics are genius and he really captures that stuck in the friend zone vibe that we sometimes feel from others.
